The first thing you will notice when you reach Hanoi is the crazy traffic (in terms of the number of people driving, and also how they drive) … Welcome to Vietnam! Most of the things you want to see are located in or close by the “Old quarters”. You can easily spend 3-4 days in the capital to enjoy the Northern Vietnamese way of life! The food is great and you will get the chance to share a local beer with the many backpackers who go through this city.

The country capital is a great place to see and to stay. It is quite huge but the nice neighbourhoods can be visited in a few days.

Hanoi is captial city of Vietnam. It's a huge city, where you can see a lot. From Temples, Pagodas, theater, opera to the streets crowded with people. There's a lot of traffic as well, like all around Vietnam. So, no fresh air :) We tried to use public transport, but got lost twice, so we walked most of the time. On the picture above is Hoan Kiem Lake, which lies between Old and French Quarter.

My first encounter with Vietnam was in this busy city. It's completely different from China. Busier, noisier, dirtier...more alive! Hanoi is a nice city to just walk around in. There are many temples and markets to visit and the Hoan Kiem Lake in the Old Quarter is a nice getaway from the busyness. Everywhere you look you'll see motorbikes, or as they call them (and you as backpacker from now on as well) 'motobikes'. Hearing 'Hello, motobike?' will drive you nuts after a while, but you'll learn to ignore it. As well as drivers honking their horns more in 1 minute than we ever would in our entire lives. Throwing your garbage on the street is normal. People with carts clean the streets at night. What I loved is that you can find good quality bread on every street corner! And as a backpacker you of course will have to go to a Bia Hoi at night! Crossing the street will look like a suicide attempt, but believe me...just start walking slowly and the traffic will flow around you! It's fun!

Hanoi is probably one of the craziest cities in the world. It's like Bangkok, but on extacy. Hanoi is stimulating all your senses. When you get dropped of by the bus take a taxi or a minivan to the old quarter where you'll find all the budget accomadation.

Hanoi the capital city of Vietnam. During the day: dirty, noisy, croudy. But everywhere parks and lakes to hang around and relax. The street food is very tasty and the fruits ar amazing. The bars at the streets close at 10 pm and nightlife around midnigt.. can be sure the police is coming to close it.
