Probably one of the most stunning sight that you will see on the Java island! The lunar scenery makes the whole experience unreal! Most guesthouses will tell you that it is important that you wake up at four in the morning in order to witness the sunrise from a high spot on the plain... they will of course also try to convince you that you can only go there using their jeep. My advice: after the 10 hours bus ride you had the previews day, you better sleep a few more hours in order to be fresh and rested. Just wake up at 6:30am and walk up the road until you reach the park entrance (very easy to find). Then you will have plenty of time to walk around the crater without having to follow the "organized" guesthouse tour. At the time we were there, the volcano was active and even the locals were looking with awe at the huge cloud of smoke that was drifting with the wind down the valley! Definitely one of the highlight of the trip.
