Step 37/48: Taiwan - Taipei

Taipei photo by Guillaume Barreau

About Taipei

Taipei is a cousin to all bustling cities of Asia. Very modern, very efficient, with districts where you'd think it's still 1902, a thriving nightlife and amazing food scene. It has many interesting stuff, like the National Museum that has a huge collection of Chinese artifacts, the memorials of the Fathers of the Republic of China, and obviously, Taipei 101, phallic demonstration of the Eastern building power, which still was until recently the world's highest building.

User's opinion
The memorial to the Father of the Nation, Dr Sun Yat-sen, is also a devoted cultural and educational centre. The changing of the guards is to be missed under no excuse.

User's opinion
One of the most popular landmarks of the capital is the memorial to the generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek who led the nationalist army against the Maoist troops during the Chinese civil war. He retreated to Taiwan and is represented by a huge bronze statue. The Memorial Hall Plaza is also home to the National Theater and the National Concert Hall.

User's opinion
Taipei 101 is a 500-meter tower that used to be the tallest on earth (until the completion of Dubai's 800-odd-meter Burj Khalifa). The view is pretty obviously a must-see.

User's opinion
The National Palace Museum is the collection of all the artifacts that Chiang Kai-shek troops gathered and brought to Taipei at the end of the Chinese civil war. It's a huge exhibition of Chinese arts' masterpieces that has no equivalent in the mainland.
