Step 31/60: Malaysia - Tanah Rata

Tanah Rata photo by Jantine De jong

About Tanah Rata

Small village in the Cameron Highlands. Starting point for many hiking trails. Also the place where everyone goes to see the famous Rafflesia flower, a huge and awful smelling parasitic flower that can grow to be 1 meter wide! Also home to the Boh Tea Plantation where famous black tea is grown. The town itself has nothing special to offer, although I was very amazed to find a Starbucks here!

User's opinion
Incredibly divers! Starting off with a 4x4 off road drive through some jungle. A jungle hike to see the Rafflesia Flower, visiting a waterfall and shoot some darts with a blowing pipe. Then off to the Boh Tea Plantation where you'll get a tour. Drive through the plantation to the lookout point of the highest mountain and finally one more trek through a very mossy, fairy tale like forest. Money's worth!

User's opinion
Very modern building in a rustic setting. Here you can relax, drink some of the various tasting tea and enjoy the baked goods they have here. There's also a shop, where you can buy the tea they grow here (although not very cheap). You can also get a tour through the factory. To get here, just take the bus or hitchhike, people are friendly here!

Feels like camping in Holland. Dutchies walking around with exploded hair and toilet paper on their way to the toilet in the morning. Sleep in the barracks :) Nice place, good food!
