Bishkek has almost everything of a typical ex USSR city. Big ugly square buildings, black from pollution, poverty and unemployment are visible at almost every single corner. Shots of Vodka are sold in the streets (1$) even during the calls to prayer. Museums show more the ancient glory of the soviet army than the history of the proper Kyrgyz people but it's still worth seeing. Contrasting with black and grey city, you will see everywhere in the distance the snowy mountains in the distance... From Bishkek you can spend a whole day in the natural park Ala Achar and hike up to the first glaciers at around 3300m at the Racek refuge. You will be there surrounded by the highest mountains of the area (c. 4880m). It's easy to share a taxi to go to the entrance park at 2200m. The driver will wait for you as long as needed.
